About The Dragon

Who We Are

The Dragon was founded in 1998 by University of Guelph alumna, Jenn Haines, who wanted to create the kind of comics and games store she would want to shop in. We believe in creating a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone. We don't care if you're new to comics or games or coming back after a hiatus, or if you don't look like the "typical" comic fan or gamer. No matter what brings you to The Dragon, we're happy you're here!

What We Do

We are a hybrid store, selling comics, graphic novels, board games, card games, miniature games, and RPGs.

We have a full-service subscription system for comic collectors. There are no minimums and no deposits required. We just ask that you pick up your comics at least once a month. We also have some backissues and CGC books.

We host gaming events 5 nights a week. We also run tournaments and creator signings throughout the year. When we aren't running events, you can book our tables for your gaming meet-ups!

Our big events are:

Free Comic Book Day - the first Saturday of May
Get 5 free comics just for coming out, and 5 more for every $20 you spend in the store. Plus expect some extra freebies!

Comics for Excellence - first two weeks of July
Bring in your report card and get a free comic for every E in your learning skills.

Guelph Comics Jam - September tbd
We fill the middle of Old Quebec Street with comic creators and local vendors. Come and celebrate the comic arts with us!

Downtown Trick-or-Treat - the Saturday before Hallowe'en
We founded this event in 2016 and it has grown to be a huge event for all ages (we mean ALL)! Visit participating downtown retailers for candy and then stop by The Dragon for free comics and raffle tickets for a chance to win an incredible basket of goodies from downtown stores.

We also work with schools and libraries to host Book Fairs and provide graphic novels. Check out our Comics in the Classroom page for more info!

Awards
The Dragon, and its owner Jenn, and manager Amy, are recipients of numerous awards, recognizing excellence in retail and the community, including

Our History:

The Dragon opened its doors in 1998 at 123 Wyndham St. North. After just a year and a half, we moved to 3 Wyndham St. North (next to the Cornerstone) and stayed there for 10 years.

In 2009, we moved into Old Quebec Street into a much bigger space, which allowed us to expand areas like graphic novels, and board games, while shrinking our anime rentals.
In 2011, we moved into our current home in the mall. We opened a pop-up shop briefly in 2014, which was followed by an expansion of our main location.
In November 2016, we opened a second location in the South End of Guelph. The South location closed August of 2022.
In June 2018, we opened our third location in Milton, Ontario. That store closed in February 2025.
